Qatar Foundation Students’ Initiative Toward Syria; Syrian Relief Week
On February 2012, a Georgetown Senior, Mohammed Farran, initiated a student organization called the Syrian Students’ Association. Soon after, that organization became an official HBKU student organization and had a much wider reach. The members of SSA are currently spread out all across Education City and the purpose of the organization is to spread Syrian culture and heritage.Their biggest event so far happened recently at the end of March, The Syrian Relief Week.
It was a weeklong fundraising event of different activities such as bake sale and henna. The fundraising was organized in cooperation with The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) and aimed to raise money for Syrian refugees. The fundraising activities were spread at four university campuses and the HBKU Student Center in order to gather donations for Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan affected by the crisis and to raise awareness about the dire humanitarian situation from 25 to 29 March week the Syrian Student Association organized a weeklong campaign. The campaign aimed to collect funds for the Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan. The event also raised awareness about the dire humanitarian condition the Syrians are facing right now, living in the conflict filled area. The Syria Relief Week partnered up with the Qatar Red Crescent Society and collected QR 26,342 in a span of one week.
