PRINTING AND PRINTMAKING

What is Painting & Printmaking?

Painting and Printmaking is dedicated to the visual exploration of contemporary issues. While the practice of painting and printmaking involves different studio skills and approaches, they are closely interrelated areas of the visual arts.

In drawing or painting the student produces one original work of art, whereas in printmaking the student has the ability to produce as many identical images as he or she desires.

The departmental curriculum enables students to have a focused and specialized education in painting and printmaking as well as access, through electives, to the other disciplines at VCUQatar and in the Education City community. Students can expect to encounter and be part of a concentrated program of instruction in practice and theory, which will provide the foundation for independent exploration and artistic development.

Students are given detailed technical instruction in a variety of media and the training that facilitates a professional crafting and presentation of work. In classroom discussions students examine a range of contemporary critical issues which allows them to have an understanding of studio work as part of a historical continuum. Students develop skills for critical analysis, and are challenged to think, to articulate ideas visually and to defend them verbally. The flexibility of the curriculum permits students to tailor a course of study suited to their professional and personal ambitions. The department provides exposure to a plurality of ideas and stylistic approaches. Our students have an extensive educational experience to build their intellectual, conceptual and technical abilities.

Painting, drawing and printmaking form the core of this major. Students may concentrate on painting or printmaking, or both. Students develop basic and advanced skills in these disciplines. In addition to the traditional techniques, students can explore printmaking through many other contemporary avenues. Our faculty consists of working artists and historians. Through this major VCUQatar aspires to contribute to cultural dialogue and development, enhance visual literacy and encourage the growth of individual perception, enterprise and artistic decision making.

After graduation, Painting and Printmaking alumni can establish their own artist studios and pursue careers in a variety of related fields within the art, museum, cultural and communication professions.
