COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ADVISOR

Community Building is one of the key responsibilities of a Community Development Advisor (CDA). Community Building is about getting to know residents and fellow staff members, both individually and collectively, by investing time and energy into activities and events that will help facilitate the development of positive and meaningful relationships. As para-professional or student staff, these peer advisors assist students with their transition to the rigors of college life by serving as a campus resource, a role model of a successful student and in some cases, a mentor for new students. A Residential Education Model is in place to assist staff with:

  • Getting to know residents;
  • Helping residents get to know each other;
  • Assessing and addressing the needs of residents;
  • Developing community building activities to meet those needs, and
  • Encouraging residents to become active members of the community.

CDAs are responsible for assisting the students on their floors and throughout the building. They are directly supervised by Residence Hall Directors (RHDs).

If you are interested or to find out more about becoming a Community Development Advisor, please contact your Residence Hall Director.

Sustainable Living Ambassadors

Sustainable Living Ambassadors (SLAs) work to develop a sustainable presence in Hamad Bin Khalifa University by providing educational programs and events for students around sustainable living. The SLA position is a paid, part-time (5 hours per week) commitment. SLAs work closely with the Sustainability Education Coordinator. Examples of SLA responsibilities are below:

  • Engage students in issues of conservation and personal environmental responsibility
  • Work with Housing and Residence Life to identify sustainability projects in the HRL community
  • Develop creative outreach materials (posters, e-mails, eco boards, etc.)
  • Assist in organizing sustainable living competitions in the residence halls
  • Facilitate recycling and energy events in the residence halls
  • Participation in special events and campaign activities

Look for SLAs around your hall and be ready to participate in events coming up such as the beach clean-up, the recycling competition, and energy competitions between halls! If you are interested in this part time position please contact Sustainability Education Coordinator, Christopher Silva at

GENERAL PROGRAMMING

Housing and Residence Life strives to make every resident feel like their hall is a home away from home. In an effort to make the halls fun and inviting, the professional staff - Residence Hall Directors (RHD's) - and the live-in student staff - Community Development Advisors (CDA's) - work together to make your stay a pleasant experience.

Our focus is on hall events that appeal to the needs of each community of residents, while at the same time creating a space where residents have the opportunity to meet other residents from a different university partner or Academic Bridge Program. When holding hall events we make use of the physical spaces and resources within Hamad Bin Khalifa University, but we also take residents off campus so that they may form a connection with the wider community of Doha.

Residents are invited to take an active role in the planning of events that appeal to them and their particular community. The RHDs, CDAs, and Residence Hall Council (RHC) embrace resident input to improve their experience in the residence halls. If you have something that you would like to do as a community of resident students, come to your local staff member with the idea and we'll work with you to make it happen!
