Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) hosted an international ethics workshop at Education City’s Qatar Foundation Student Center last week.The event, ‘Professional Ethics in a Globalised World: Towards a Unified East-West Perspective,’ was presented in partnership with the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS).
It brought together over 35 leading ethics scholars to discuss professional and cultural ethics, globalisation of higher education and Islamic approaches during two days of inter-cultural and inter-disciplinary discussions, roundtables and panels.
The participating scholars came from leading institutions in the US, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt and Oman.They represented a wide range of academic disciplines including engineering, philosophy, religious studies, ethics, politics, public policy, socio-linguistics, education and law.Due to the overall diverse nature of the event, the workshop generated a wealth of information and participants walked away with a lot to think about.They were impressed with the quality of scholarship and the dedication of Qatar Foundation and Qatar National Research Fund to revitalise intellectual life in the region.
Topics under discussion included engineering ethics, international law, globalisation of higher education, moral decision-making in cross-cultural contexts, inter-cultural ethics, Islamic approaches to ethics and gender, globalisation and ethics.
