A group of students in Education City plan to hold EC’s largest event, “Back to School Majlis” in hopes of gaining donations for famine-affected countries in Africa.
Thousands of people have died of extreme hunger and drought in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and other countries that have been shaken by political turbulence. Thousands more, many of whom are children, are at the risk of losing their lives any moment.
“The situation in Somalia is very grave at the moment. People are dying every few minutes, and mothers literally have to choose between which of their children they can afford to keep alive,” said Mohammed Mehdi, one of the organizers of the event.
As the struggle to collect sufficient funds for famine victims through the Horn of Africa continues on an international level, students in EC have come up with the initiative, “ECUnited4Afrika.” The initiative aims to attract donors from all over Qatar for a mega event to-be held on the 15th of September at CMUQ East-west hallway at Qatar foundationfrom 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
There will be performances by volunteers, presentations, and games at the charity dinner later during the event, followed by a raffle draw. Merchandise supporting the “ECUnited4Afrika” spirit will be available for sale on different stalls, as well as different university spirits.
“I believe this event will enable the students at Education city to help make a difference in the lives of many people in Africa. We hope that all the students will come out for this event and show the world that EC students care,” said Abdalla Abdalla, a Texas A&M in Qatar graduate and ECUnited4Pakistan’s head organizer.
“Needless to mention, like last year universities and high school students all around Doha, besides those here at EC, have put forward their positive input in pulling together the event,” he added.
Tickets for the event are priced QR 30 and will be sold at the respective universities from 7th September until the 15th of September. Reservations can be made online at or through the contact number provided below. Funds will be handed over to Qatar Red Crescent and Munazzamat Al Da’wa Al-Islamiya for distribution to famine survivors in Africa.
“We have received most support from the youth, the students, in EC and all around Doha, however, we are looking forward to seeing more of such compassion from the general public,” said Sultana Jesmine, head organizer of the event.
The initiative has been taken up by student-run organization B&B Syndicate, and myeducationcity members. Donation boxes are available at the respective universities in EC. Tickets and other merchandize items are being sold at various EC campuses and will run until the mega-event.
Students have also established an online account with Doha Islamic Bank (account #: 401 260052) to collect funds from donors across the globe. Donations have also been accepted at orientations and events of different universities in Education City such as “Ya Hala” event that was held on September 3rd. Volunteers and sponsors are needed to support and promote the cause.
Two other projects that ECunited4Afrika has been collaborating with are the “Green Somalia Project,” initiated by a group of CMUQ staff, and “Somalia Kitchen Project,” run by a citizen of Somalia based in Qatar with direct collaborations with organizations in Somalia and other places in Africa.
