Georgetown University School of Foreign Service

Founded in 1789, the same year the US constitution took effect, Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit University in the United States. Today, Georgetown is a major student-centered, international, research university offering respected undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in Washington, DC, Doha, Qatar, and around the world. The establishment of the Qatar campus in 2005 continues a long history of engagement in the Middle East. Georgetown established America's first research center devoted to the Arab world more than 30 years ago.

Since 1919 the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University has devoted itself to educating the next generation of global leaders. With unparalleled resources in Washington, DC, and Doha, Qatar, the School of Foreign Service remains one of the world's foremost institutions for the study of international affairs. Internationally recognized academic excellence, intercultural understanding, and Jesuit ideals of service are some of the hallmarks of a School of Foreign Service education.

At the Qatar campus, students have the opportunity to major in International Politics or Culture and Politics.

Culture and Politics majors explore the construction of cultural and political identity, and how that construction shapes and informs people's outlooks, perceptions and beliefs. Students develop a range of tools and methodological approaches to cultural analysis, while studying the links between cultural identity and questions of power and authority in society.

International Politics majors have the opportunity to look at the principle building blocks of international relations by learning how state and non-state actors cooperate and compete on political issues.

Students can also receive certificates in American Studies, or Arab and Regional Studies. These programs allow students to gain a deeper understanding on a particular region of the world.

There are a variety of clubs and organizations in which students can get involved. The International Relations Club runs an annual Model United Nations conference that brings more than 300 high school students from around the world to Doha. Student volunteers manage and staff the Hoya English Language Program (HELP), teaching English as a second language to workers in Doha. Students can also participate in sports teams such as men's soccer, women's soccer and cricket.

With a liberal-arts education, students have the opportunity to study diverse subjects such as economics, philosophy, theology, history, government and language. Georgetown University graduates are therefore prepared for a wide variety of career paths. Upon graduation, they will join more than 15,000 alumni serving in leadership roles in government service, non-profit organizations, and private industry - any organization where a global outlook is necessary.
